GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY FROM BIOGAS
A biogas plant which is linked to a toilet or used for the treatment of organic waste can generate biogas everyday as long as waste is feed into the plant daily. The biogas can be used for electricity generation that can be used to meet the energy need of the plant. The excess biogas generated from the plant can be used to meet the in-house energy need.
Installing the biogas plant will help reduce the pollution which would have been caused by the used of other means of electricity generation such as; use of diesel generator and Hydro-power (results to deforestation. The gas produced can be utilized as operational fuel in gensets after it must have been passed through a gas scrubber to remove unwanted particles, moisture, gases etc. There are two ways:
- You can either use a duel fuel model generator (which are diesel gensets). For a system like this biogas is connected to the generator through the air mix. Once the biogas is passed through the gensets, automatically the consumption requirement of the diesel is reduced. The working capacity of a duel fuel gensets are in 80%-20% mode.
- The second way is to use a 100% biogas generator. This will mean buying a generator that runs only on biogas
The capacity of the generator to be installed will depend upon the quantity of biogas produced daily.
